A recent major car wreck involving six vehicles put eight people in the hospital and left one driver dead at the scene. The crash, which was reported around 6:30 p.m. on the night of February 16, happened on Northwest 37th Avenue near the intersection with Northwest 194th Street. News coverage from the scene the morning after showed that in addition to the vehicles and their passengers, damage was done to at least one adjacent property, where a wall and fence were struck by one of the vehicles.
Major Response, Circumstances Being Investigated
Twenty-three emergency vehicles responded to the chaotic accident scene, which apparently began with two cars and quickly expanded. It’s still not clear exactly what triggered the crash, but speed has been suggested as a factor. That’s easy to believe when you look at video after the crash showing damage, including at least three cars which were totally mangled.
Rescue workers from Miami-Dade County worked for almost an entire hour to free one man trapped in the wreckage, but they were unable to save him. Two of the other victims, both from a single car, were said to be in critical condition, while the remaining victims from the other vehicles were reported to have suffered only minor injuries.
A witness has said that she saw two cars weaving in and out of traffic at high speed, and one report noted that drag racing might have been involved. So far there have not been any reports of charges filed.
Always at Risk
It’s tempting for each of us to think that this kind of crash can’t happen to us. We like to believe that this kind of thing happens to other people and on other streets. But car crashes happen everywhere, all the time.
One resident at the scene in Miami Gardens noted that another crash had previously destroyed a wall on his property. Just a month before in mid-January, Miami Gardens saw another major wreck, on Red Road, in which an SUV and a passenger car collided at an intersection, injuring four and sending two of them to a hospital trauma unit.
Nationwide, there were more than 6.3 million crashes in 2015—and that only includes the ones reported to police. While we should all be concerned about the eight people injured in this crash and extend our sympathies to the family of the man who died, these victims are only the tip of the iceberg. More than 2.4 million were injured and more than 35,000 were killed in traffic accidents that year, and all indications are that these numbers are on an upward trend.
When you or someone close to you has been harmed in a car crash, there will be many expenses incurred in the aftermath. Vehicles will need to be replaced, property damage might need to be fixed, and once the immediate costs of medical treatments have passed, there could be ongoing bills to pay for rehab, physical therapy, and even long-term care.
